All oncology centers in Kazakhstan will host an open day aimed at the early detection of sarcoma, a rare and aggressive cancer that affects bones and soft tissues.

Up to 500 cases annually

According to orthopedic oncologist Almatbek Yelekbayev, sarcoma is a highly aggressive malignant tumor that develops in the connective tissues, including bones, muscles, fat and blood vessels.

«This disease is rare, accounting for only 1% of all cancers in adults. It is more common in children, where it represents 15% of all childhood cancers. According to statistics, an average of five people per million are diagnosed with the disease. In Kazakhstan, between 300 and 500 new cases are registered annually,» Yelekbayev said.

What are the symptoms?

According to the oncologist, the primary symptom is pain. It often worsens at night and is typically felt around large joints such as the knee, hip or shoulder.

The doctor advises anyone experiencing these symptoms to consult a specialist as soon as possible.

How is sarcoma treated?

Treatment typically requires a combined approach.

«This includes surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy. However, thanks to modern medical advances, limbs can be preserved in 95% of cases by replacing joints with prosthetic implants and using additional metal fixation,» the doctor explained.

According to Yelekbayev, the Institute of Oncology and Radiology in Almaty performs around 50 major joint replacement surgeries and about 40 joint-preserving procedures each year.

«Unfortunately, there is no specific way to prevent this disease. However, maintaining a healthy lifestyle and a balanced diet can reduce the risk of illness and improve recovery during the postoperative period,» the orthopedic oncologist said.

When can you get a free examination?

Yelekbayev emphasized that early diagnosis and timely treatment significantly increase the chances of a full recovery while helping patients maintain their quality of life.

On July 18, all cancer centers across Kazakhstan will hold an open day to mark Sarcoma Awareness Month, with specialists providing consultations from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

During the event, Kazakhstanis will be able to undergo an initial examination, receive consultations from an oncologist, and obtain informational materials free of charge and without a referral.

Earlier this year, Kazakhstan introduced a «green corridor» system, allowing patients with suspected cancer to undergo examinations without waiting in line.
