The Financial Monitoring Agency has detained Kairat Boranbayev, one of the richest businessmen in Kazakhstan, reported Kaztag.kz and Vlast.kz citing the law enforcement agency.
However, the agency didn’t confirm this when it responded to the Kursiv.media edition’s request. «There is no official information. We will inform you once we have this information,» the agency said.
Boranbayev is a relative of the older daughter of the former president Nazarbayev. In 2013 Aisultan Nazarbayev, younger son of Dariga Nazarbayeva married Alima Boranbayeva, daughter of Kairat Boranbayev. In 2020 Aysultan died.
Kairat Boranbayev was born September 22, 1966. In 1989 he graduated from the Kazakh State Institute of Physical Culture. In 2000, he graduated from National University, faculty of law.
Over his career, he worked as a coach, vice president of Systema, director-general of KazTransGaz. Since March 17, 2015, he has been working as president of the National Paralympic Committee of Kazakhstan. According to Forbes Kazakhstan, with a fortune of $590 million, Boranbayev is ranked 14th among the 50 richest businessmen in the country.
Along with Serzhan Zhumashev, Boranbayev owns Esentai Tower and Esentai Mall. Also, he is the only owner of the underground trading center Almaly. Boranbayev is head of the supervisory board of the Kairat football club.
In 2016, Kairat Borabayev became a McDonald’s franchisee. His company runs 23 restaurants in six cities across Kazakhstan: Almaty, Nur-Sultan, Karaganda, Kostanay, Aktobe and Atyrau.
