President Tokayev proposes new agreement between SCO members
President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has proposed the preparation and adoption of a new agreement on trust in the military sphere. In his speech at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), he primarily addressed security on the Eurasian continent, the president’s press service reported.
According to Tokayev, security is the top priority for the SCO:
«The current hurdles are the result of an acute crisis in the system of international relations. That is why the SCO should step forward and allocate more efforts to prevent further erosion of international law, new geopolitical rifts and, ultimately, to promote peace and security in the broader global context,» the president said.
He highlighted the unique capabilities of the SCO as a driving force behind peace and security throughout all of Eurasia. To reach this goal, Kazakhstan has introduced the initiative called «The Global Unity for Fair Peace, Harmony and Growth,» which has been supported by all SCO member states.
The president of Kazakhstan also emphasized the need for an agreement on trust measures in the military sphere aimed at countering «three forces of evil.» He suggested preparing a special mechanism for the constant sharing of information between the SCO member states to enhance cybersecurity.
In addition to security, Tokayev discussed expanding trade and economic relations, noting that trade between SCO members rose by 6.5% in 2023.
