ICAO reveals cost of producing eco-friendly jet fuel
According to Blandine Ferrier, regional officer of environmental protection at ICAO, about $3.2 billion is needed for all the airlines in the world to reach a 55% usage of environmentally clean jet fuel.
As the official noted, personnel play a key role in this process, and the 55% mark in bioethanol production is going to be reached with their help. Of course, this would require huge support and a lot of investment. The ICAO estimates that $3.2 billion is needed to scale up production and personnel training.
In this regard, the ICAO requires international financial organizations to examine different mechanisms and instruments designed to support the production of green jet fuel and personnel training. The ICAO has prepared special guidelines for public agencies, companies, banks and other interested parties aimed at reducing CO2 emissions from international aviation. The guidelines include recommendations on how to obtain access to finances for green jet fuel production through various mechanisms. Moreover, the organization has been developing a special online platform for searching for partners in this field. The platform is expected to be launched next year.
Earlier this year, Kazakhstan’s Vice Minister of Transport Talgat Lastayev said that Kazakhstan would start producing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). KazMunayGas-Aero, LLP, a subsidiary of the national oil company in Kazakhstan, has already engaged in production planning.
Furthermore, starting from 2028, Kazakhstan should gradually increase SAF’s share in its aviation industry. According to the ICAO, the share of green fuel must soar from the current level of 4% to 55% by 2050 globally.
