According to the Speedtest Global Index, Kazakhstan climbed one position, reaching 57th place in the global internet speed ranking.
The ranking analyzed aggregated data on download and upload speeds, as well as data transfer via mobile and broadband internet.
In terms of mobile internet connection speed, Kazakhstan was ranked 57th with a result of 53.76 megabits per second (Mbps). This result places the country between Japan (53.54 Mbps) and Spain (55.38 Mbps). The top three countries in the ranking were the UAE with 453.87 megabits per second, Qatar with 383.75 Mbps and Kuwait with 257.30 Mbps.
In terms of broadband internet connection speed, Kazakhstan was ranked 88th with a speed of 71.97 Mbps, lagging behind Kyrgyzstan (73.78 Mbps) and Uzbekistan (80.84 Mbps).
Among the largest cities in the world, Astana improved its position by two spots, reaching 71st place with 83.87 Mbps in terms of mobile internet, surpassing Tel Aviv in Israel and Osaka in Japan. On the other hand, Almaty slipped by two positions to 93.71 Mbps and now ranks just after Hamburg in Germany. In terms of broadband internet, Astana was ranked 97th with 83.88 Mbps, while Almaty ranked 103rd with 80.21 Mbps. The top three cities in this category were Valparaíso, Chile (322.91 Mbps), Lyon, France (321.13 Mbps) and Abu Dhabi, the UAE (319.63 Mbps).
According to Datareportal, mobile internet connection speed in Kazakhstan grew by 68.6% in 2023 but remained lower than in Japan. At the same time, the Minister of Digital Development, Innovations, and Aerospace Industry of Kazakhstan, Bagdat Musin, claimed that internet connection speeds in Astana are faster than in Tokyo.
