Kazakhstan convicts two of its citizens for involvement in Syrian conflict
Kazakhstan’s National Security Committee (Rus. KNB) reported on the trial of two men who participated in terrorist organizations in Syria. Their return to Kazakhstan was facilitated by the KNB’s collaboration with international partners.
The trials of the two men, who were involved with terrorist organizations in Syria between 2020 and 2022, have concluded. The criminal investigations were conducted by the KNB.
«In close collaboration with foreign partners, our operatives identified the suspects abroad, brought them back to Kazakhstan and placed them under arrest. One of the individuals, a resident of the Turkestan region, was found guilty of participating in the activities of a terrorist group,» the KNB stated.
The second individual, a resident of Atyrau, was convicted of a similar offense and also found guilty of undergoing terrorist training abroad.
«Both men have been sentenced to varying prison terms, and the verdicts have taken legal effect,» the KNB added.
In early December 2024, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s regime collapsed. Assad fled the country and was granted asylum in Russia.
