OpenAI opens South Korea office, weighs data center next

At a press conference held in Seoul on Sept. 10 commemorating the official launch of OpenAI’s office in South Korea, Jason Kwon, the company’s chief strategy officer, mentioned that the company could further establish a data center in the country, The Korea Times reported.
The potential plans also included expanding cooperation with Korea’s major conglomerates, including Samsung and SK. The spokesman also pledged to support the government’s ambitions to achieve sovereignty in the artificial intelligence industry.
«When it comes to the hardware chip side, I think we have a lot of good partnerships in motion with companies like SK and Samsung,» The Korea Times cited Kwon as saying.
Personnel details for OpenAI’s Korea office, as well as the volume of the company’s investment, have not been revealed.
Separately, Bloomberg sources familiar with the matter claimed earlier this September that OpenAI was looking into building an AI data center in India.
