Wave of allies recognize Palestinian statehood in coordinated move

The UK, Canada, Australia and Portugal have all recognized Palestine together in a coordinated diplomatic effort. Belgium, France, Luxembourg, Malta and possibly New Zealand and Liechtenstein may soon follow suit. These announcements, coming just before a UN conference on the two-state solution, mark the first time any G7 members have taken this step, according to The Guardian.
Supporters say recognizing Palestine is needed to keep the two-state solution alive, especially as Israel continues to expand settlements in the West Bank. Leaders explained that this move supports Palestinian statehood but also shows ongoing support for Israel’s security. Portugal’s foreign minister called for a ceasefire and the release of hostages.
These decisions are happening while there is growing international concern about Israel’s military actions in Gaza and its settlement plans in essential parts of the West Bank. European officials, led by French President Emmanuel Macron, say recognizing Palestine is part of a broader effort to reform the Palestinian Authority, limit Hamas’s influence, and restart real negotiations.
Israel is against these recognitions and warns that they could lead to the annexation of the West Bank. The United States has called the announcements «performative.» These actions put more pressure on Israel and highlight disagreements among Western countries over the two-state solution.
