Kazakhstan is embarking on an ambitious project to launch a national Wi-Fi operator dedicated to providing secure, reliable internet access for all its citizens. According to Kairat Akhmetov, the head of Freedom Telecom Operations, the initiative will start in 10 cities

The company’s plan to create a national Wi-Fi operator was announced during a meeting with cabinet members. The company will deploy the new network at social and infrastructure facilities, making internet access points available at border crossing points, airports, train and bus stations, schools and medical facilities.

«The infrastructure we’ve been creating is gradually becoming a platform for the development of digital services and solutions based on artificial intelligence (AI), supporting Kazakhstan’s push for an AI economy,» Akhmetov said.

In the first stage, the project will provide coverage to 400 locations in 10 cities. The network will expand to 10,000 access points by 2026 and to 20,000 by 2027.

The company also plans to install 2,000 fixed wireless access (FWA) base stations. These stations will deploy a high-speed wireless internet network providing speeds of up to 1 gigabit per second. Shymkent and Aktau will receive the technology by the end of this month, followed by Astana, Almaty and several regional centers.

In the Almaty region, Freedom Telecom is implementing a large-scale project to build a unified network that integrates all types of communications for data transmission over a single secure infrastructure. The fiber-optic communication network run by the company spans a total length of 4,000 kilometers.
