On Oct. 29, Liverpool suffered a devastating 0-3 defeat to Crystal Palace at home in the English Football League (EFL) Cup, marking the first time in over 91 years that the Reds had fallen behind by three goals without scoring in a domestic cup match, Opta reported.

English Football League Cup

Fourth round, Oct. 29

Liverpool vs. Crystal Palace: 0-3

Goals: Ismaïla Sarr 41’, 45’, Yeremy Pino 88’

Near the end of the first half, Crystal Palace’s Senegalese winger Ismaïla Sarr stood out with a brace, while the team’s Spanish player Yeremy Pino capped the scoring.

The last time Liverpool recorded such a result was in February 1934, when the Reds lost to Bolton in the FA Cup fifth round.

The team coached by Arne Slot faced its sixth defeat in the past seven matches across all competitions. Along with yesterday’s loss, Liverpool had been beaten by four clubs in the Premier League — Crystal Palace (1-2), Chelsea (1-2), Manchester United (1-2), and Brentford (2-3). The Reds also lost to Galatasaray (0-1) in the second round of the Champions League. According to Opta, no other club from Europe’s top five leagues has lost as many matches as Liverpool since Sept. 27.

Commenting on the defeat, Slot noted that the team has a tough match schedule. The Dutch manager also said that Liverpool’s squad is not as big as the football community believes. However, last summer the Reds set a record for transfer spending. He added that Liverpool has always used the EFL Cup to give academy players experience. Slot also highlighted that their game against Brentford came just two days after an away match against Eintracht Frankfurt and that he had seen a team struggling to play three games in seven days, though he stressed it was not an excuse.

In turn, Crystal Palace has already beaten Liverpool three times this season. Along with the victories in the Premier League and the EFL Cup, the team coached by Oliver Glasner also outperformed the Reds on Aug. 10 in the 2025 Football Association Community Shield.

Crystal Palace will face Arsenal in the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup.
