Legendary Ford Focus leaves the market after 27 years. During this period, more than 12 million cars were sold. According to Autocar, production has finished at the plant in Saarlouis, Germany, marking global changes in Ford’s strategy as it shifts toward electric models.

Plans to cease Ford Focus production were announced in 2022. Electric crossovers, the Explorer and Capri, based on Volkswagen’s MEB platform, replaced it. Notably, the Saarlouis factory currently doesn’t produce any models. The company has not clarified whether the facility will be sold or repurposed for new model production.

The future of the Ford lineup

According to Autocar, Ford is set to fill the vacant segment with a new mid-sized crossover expected in 2027. The new model will be sold alongside the Kuga, which features both gas hybrid and electric options.

The departure of the Focus, and earlier the Fiesta, has significantly altered the company’s position in the European market. In recent years, Ford has lost almost half of its market share, falling from second place in 2015 to 12th place in 2024, according to the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association.

New management and strategy

To help retain its market position, Ford has appointed Jim Baumbick as President of Ford Europe. He is a former Focus and Kuga model line manager. One of his key tasks is developing models that meet European customer demands.
