2026 Winter Olympics begin with alpine skiing event

The 2026 Winter Games in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo get underway today with alpine skiing. Downhill skiers are participating in official training runs, with results used to determine the starting order for the main competition.
Mixed doubles curling matches are also scheduled for today: Sweden vs. South Korea, Great Britain vs. Norway, Canada vs. Czechia and Estonia vs. Switzerland. Later, men’s singles luge official training will take place.
Kazakhstan has no athletes competing in these events. The country is represented by 36 athletes across 10 sports.
The official Opening Ceremony of the XXV Winter Olympic Games will be held on Feb. 6 at Milan’s San Siro Stadium, where the Olympic flame will be lit.
Kazakhstan’s flag bearers will be freestyle skier Ayaulym Amrenova and short track speed skater Denis Nikisha.
