Universal Studios has decided to revive one of its most profitable franchises, «The Mummy.» There are many expectations for the movie, which is scheduled for release on May 19, 2028, nearly 20 years after the original’s release.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Universal has persuaded key cast members to join the new project. These negotiations took several months for the studio, which has already appointed Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett as the directors. The pair is well known for hits such as «Scream» and «V/H/S.»
Even though no details of the new movie have been disclosed, one thing is known for sure: Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are onboard and will once again play Rick O’Connell and his wife, Evelyn. The original 1999 film grossed over $422.5 million worldwide, launching one of Universal’s most successful franchises. The movie also made Fraser an A-list star.
The Mummy franchise consists of three main films released in 1999, 2001 and 2008. In 2017, Universal attempted to reboot the series with a remake of «The Mummy» starring Tom Cruise, but the film was a box-office failure and panned by critics.
The film was intended to be the start of a shared cinematic universe of the studio’s classic monsters. A project similar to «The Avengers» was expected to feature Dracula, Frankenstein and other spooky characters in a new franchise, but after the project’s failure, those plans were put on the shelf.
