South Korea to dispatch envoy to Board of Peace meeting as nonmember observer

South Korea is set to send its representative to the inaugural meeting of the Board of Peace, scheduled for Feb. 19, The Korea Times reported, citing the country’s Foreign Ministry.
Kim Yong-hyun, a former ambassador to Egypt, will represent the country as a nonmember observer and act as the special envoy of the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Notably, South Korea has been invited to the organization but has not yet made a final decision on membership. According to The Korea Times, several other nations that had been invited but have not finalized their status are also expected to be present at the event in the same capacity, including Japan, Italy, Romania, Greece and Cyprus.
The Board of Peace is an international organization initiated and chaired by U.S. President Donald Trump, with an initial focus on resolving the Gaza conflict. Some media reports describe it as having broader ambitions to evolve into a larger global forum.
Its charter was signed on Jan. 22 during the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. Kazakhstan is among the founding states, and its leader will be attending the meeting.
