Police operation against cartel leader triggers violence in Mexico

Nemesio Oseguera, 60, known as «El Mencho,» the alleged leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), died in custody from wounds he sustained during a military operation in the western Mexican state of Jalisco. The operation was carried out with U.S. intelligence support, Reuters reported.
After news of Oseguera’s death became public, violence was reported in several parts of the country. Authorities said suspected cartel members set up highway blockades using burning vehicles and set fire to businesses in more than half a dozen states. Officials stated that no civilian deaths had been reported.
In the resort city of Puerto Vallarta, residents and tourists described seeing heavy smoke rising over parts of the area. Several airlines, including Air Canada, United Airlines, Aeromexico and American Airlines, temporarily suspended flights to and from the city.
The U.S. has stepped up pressure on Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum to intensify efforts against drug cartels accused of producing and trafficking narcotics, particularly fentanyl. U.S. officials have also suggested the possibility of direct military action in Mexico. While expressing support for cooperation with Washington, Sheinbaum has cautioned against any unilateral U.S. military operations on Mexican territory.
Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs urged Kazakh citizens to remain calm and prioritize their safety, noting that 35 Kazakhstan nationals are currently in Mexico.
