The Lombok arrest: Suspects in a haunting Kazakh murder case finally caught

When Indonesian police entered a hotel on Lombok Island, murder suspect Sultan Sarsemaliyev attempted to flee but was detained at the scene, according to Commissioner Ricky Purnama.
Sarsemaliyev and his wife are wanted in connection with a double homicide in Kazakhstan’s Atyrau region, a case that investigators describe as one of the most disturbing crimes in the country’s modern history. The case has drawn comparisons to the dark plot of the television series «True Detective.»

The unexplained disappearance of four members of the same family from the village of Zhangeldin in the Atyrau region went unsolved for months, alarming local residents and attracting nationwide attention.
Arrest details in Indonesia
Purnama said the operation involved officers from Indonesia’s Interpol bureau, North Lombok police and the country’s immigration service. The couple had been placed on the international wanted list under an Interpol Red Notice.
According to Indonesian authorities, the suspects entered the country on Dec. 14, 2025, arriving in Bali on a flight from Kuala Lumpur before traveling to Lombok, where they remained until their arrest.

Indonesian officials are now completing legal procedures required to deport both suspects to Kazakhstan.
Extradition to Kazakhstan
Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs confirmed that Sarsemaliyev faces charges related to a particularly serious crime that carries a potential sentence ranging from 15 years in prison to life imprisonment.
