Paul Thomas Anderson’s film «One Battle After Another,» starring Leonardo DiCaprio in the lead role, won best picture at the 98th Academy Awards on Sunday. It is the director’s first Oscar after many years of critical acclaim, the Associated Press reported.

The film, which tells a multi-generational American story about political resistance, won six awards overall. These included best director and best adapted screenplay for Anderson, best supporting actor for Sean Penn and the Academy’s first award for best casting. DiCaprio, despite playing the film’s lead role, did not win any awards this time.

Michael B. Jordan won best actor for his role in «Sinners.» Jessie Buckley received the best actress award for playing Agnes Shakespeare in «Hamnet,» becoming the first Irish performer to win the award.

The ceremony, held at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, also included a historic moment when Autumn Durald Arkapaw won best cinematography for «Sinners,» making her the first female director of photography and the first Black person to win in this category.

All in all, Ryan Coogler’s «Sinners,» a vampire film set during the Jim Crow era, led with 16 nominations and won several major awards.
