Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Health reported that citizens of Kazakhstan are drinking less alcohol, but not overall, rather in harmful amounts. But the number of adherents to a healthy lifestyle has increased. According to national surveys, more people in Kazakhstan are eating fruit and doing sports.

«A significant reduction in the consumption of alcohol in harmful amounts has been recorded. In 2015 the figure stood at 4.1%, falling to 1.6% in 2024,» the ministry’s press service said in a statement.

At the same time, the number of people participating in recreational sports is growing. The share of those who spend at least 150 minutes a week on physical activity increased from 18.8% in 2021 to 30.4% in 2024. Meanwhile, despite rising prices, Kazakhstanis are eating more fruit: the share of people who consume at least 400 grams of fruit a day rose from 18.8% in 2021 to 30.4% in 2024.

Moreover, an excise tax on energy drinks was introduced for the first time in 2026. By 2030, the tax will gradually increase from $0.22 per liter to $0.52 per liter. As a result, energy drinks will become more expensive and less affordable for consumers.
