Hungary’s new prime minister-elect, Péter Magyar, has captured the attention of social media users around the world. The 45-year-old opposition figure is the first millennial to lead the country.

Magyar has pledged to pursue a tough anti-corruption agenda, implement reforms, introduce a new constitution and move Hungary closer to the European Union.

Viral appeal beyond politics

Beyond policy, Magyar has generated widespread buzz online, with much of the attention focused on his youth and appearance.

Social media users have flooded platforms with congratulatory posts directed at Hungarians, with many praising voters for their «taste.»

Posts about Magyar have garnered tens of thousands of likes and enthusiastic comments, with some users joking that they now have an extra reason to visit — or even move to — Hungary.

Background and career

Magyar was born in Budapest in 1981. He earned a law degree and built a career in public service, including roles at Hungary’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, its representation to the EU and the prime minister’s office. His surname, «Magyar,» means «Hungarian» in Hungarian — the term Hungarians use to refer to themselves.

Personal life under scrutiny

Following the launch of his campaign against Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, details of Magyar’s personal life have drawn increased attention.

He was married to Judit Varga, minister of justice under Orbán, from August 2006 to March 2023.

After their divorce, audio recordings of their arguments surfaced in the media. Varga accused him of domestic violence, which Magyar has denied, saying the allegations were part of efforts to discredit him amid a political scandal. The couple has three sons.

Since then, Magyar has largely kept his private life out of the public eye.

However, his fondness for cats has become a lighter point of connection with supporters, earning him additional praise on social media.
