Air New Zealand is set to make its long-haul flights more comfortable, allowing passengers to sleep not just in seats but in beds. Kursiv LifeStyle takes a look at when the new option will be available on board and how much it will cost.

The sleeping accommodation, called Economy Skynest, resembles bunk beds on a sleeper train. The facility is planned to debut in November 2026 aboard the company’s Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, with bookings available starting May 18.

Skynest features six lie-flat pods and is located between the economy and premium economy cabins. Passengers can book such a berth for a four-hour period to get a good sleep during a long-haul flight.

Each nest is approximately two meters long, 64 centimeters wide at shoulder level, and around 41 centimeters wide at the feet. They are equipped with mattresses, pillows, blankets, ambient lighting, ventilation outlets, and charging ports.

The service is available for an additional fee starting from roughly $292 per session. At launch, two sessions are planned to be offered on each flight.

The airline says the project is designed for ultra-long-haul flights and aims to make journeys lasting many hours more comfortable. This is particularly relevant given New Zealand’s geographic location. For example, travelers from Kazakhstan will need to transit through China, after which the flight will take at least 11 hours.
