Check your jars: Rat poison in HiPP baby food prompts urgent recall

A batch of baby food produced by HiPP has been recalled in Austria after rat poison was found in one of the jars, authorities said. The case is under investigation, according to Deutsche Welle.
What was recalled
Police said the affected products were 190-gram jars of carrot and potato puree sold through the SPAR network. The items have been pulled from more than 1,000 stores.
Authorities in the Austrian region of Burgenland reported that suspicious jars were also identified in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Laboratory testing confirmed the presence of rat poison in at least one sample.
Possible tampering
Austria’s food safety authority said it cannot rule out deliberate contamination, including a possible extortion attempt targeting the supply chain.
HiPP noted that external interference during distribution via SPAR Austria cannot be excluded. The company warned that consuming the affected products could pose a serious health risk.
Consumer guidance
Authorities urged consumers not to eat the product and to check for signs of tampering, including:
- A white sticker with a red circle on the bottom of the jar.
- A damaged or previously opened lid.
Anyone who has handled the product is advised to wash their hands thoroughly.
Refunds and response
Both HiPP and SPAR said customers will be fully refunded for returned items.
