Germany detains Kazakhstani citizen on suspicion of spying for Russia

A Kazakh citizen has been detained in Germany on suspicion of espionage. The suspect, identified as Sergey K., may have worked for Russian intelligence, passing on details of military aid to Ukraine as well as information about Germany’s defense industry, according to Berliner Morgenpost.

German authorities believe the suspect was engaged in illegal activities for several months. He is expected to appear in court in the next few days.

What is the suspect accused of?

According to the Office of the Federal Public Prosecutor General, the Kazakh citizen had been in contact with Russian intelligence services since May 2025.

Investigators say that prior to his arrest, Sergey K. shared a significant amount of sensitive information to his handler, including data on German manufacturers of combat drones. He is also suspected of photographing military convoys on highways, including a NATO convoy, as well as government buildings in Berlin.

Additionally, the suspect is accused of informing Russian agents of planned acts of sabotage in Germany and suggesting the involvement of third parties to carry them out.

Kazakhstan MFA’s response

In response to an inquiry from Kursiv, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan said it is currently reviewing the case details.
