For the first time, Almaty will host a major exhibition of works by American artist Bill Viola, one of the most well-known and influential representatives of contemporary video art. The exhibition is scheduled to open on July 1 at the Almaty Museum of Arts, marking the first large-scale presentation of his work in Central Asia.
The exhibition is titled «Bill Viola: The Space of Time.» Visitors will be offered 16 video installations created by the artist over 40 years, ranging from his early works of the late 1970s to large-scale projects of the 2000s. The selection will include «The Reflecting Pool,» «The Greeting,» «The Raft» and «Tristan’s Ascension.»
Viola is considered one of the artists who changed the perception of video as an artistic medium. In his works, the artist addressed life and death, time, memory, spirituality and human emotions. His pieces have been presented at some of the world’s largest museums, including MoMA in New York, Tate in London, Centre Pompidou in France and Guggenheim Bilbao.
The curator is Kira Perov, executive director of Bill Viola Studio, the artist’s wife, and his longtime artistic partner.
Germany-based company 235 Media, which has long served as the technical partner for Viola’s projects worldwide, will also install the exhibition in Almaty. The museum’s hall will be entirely transformed into an immersive exhibition environment.
The exhibition will be open to the public from July 1, 2026, to Jan. 17, 2027.
