Warning signs for drivers entering the Low Emission Zone (LEZ) have begun to appear in Almaty. Kursiv Lifestyle explains what area is affected and how the initiative is expected to improve the air quality in the city.
The pilot zone is bounded by Bogenbay Batyr Street, Zheltoksan Street, Abay Avenue and Dostyk Avenue. A total of 134 road signs and information boards will be installed at entry and exit points.
A LEZ is a low-emission zone where access for higher-emitting vehicles may be restricted in the future.
However, the project is currently in a pilot phase. No restrictions, fines or entry fees have been introduced for drivers so far. Until the end of 2026, specialists will test the system, monitor traffic flows and gather data on the impact of vehicles on air quality.
The city administration expects the project to help evaluate the effectiveness of the low-emission zone and determine its future direction.
On June 3, the administration said that drivers would receive push notifications on their phones before entering the zone. The first low-emission zone began operating in Almaty in late April 2026.
