Lawsuit puts UFC’s White House event at risk of cancellation

A lawsuit filed one week before a planned UFC fight at the White House is seeking to block the June 14 event scheduled for the South Lawn.

According to MMA Fighting, the complaint was filed by U.S. Air Force veteran Paul Romano and social activist Susan Douglas, who are represented by the Public Integrity Project. The plaintiffs argue that federal officials unlawfully granted a private sports promotion access to restricted government sites, including the White House South Lawn and the nearby Lincoln Memorial, where related promotional activities are expected to take place.

Allegations of improper access and financial benefit

The lawsuit describes the planned UFC White House event as a «corrupt scheme.» The plaintiffs allege the arrangement could financially benefit politically connected individuals and organizations, including UFC leadership and affiliated parties.

They also claim that President Donald Trump previously purchased up to $50,000 in shares of TKO, the parent company of UFC, and that VIP packages for the event are being sold for as much as $1.5 million.

UFC CEO Dana White is identified as the organizer of the event alongside Trump.

Legal arguments raised in the complaint

The filing outlines three primary legal arguments.

First, the plaintiffs argue that National Park Service rules do not permit a sporting event of this kind on federal parkland under existing exemptions.

Second, they challenge the planned installation of a temporary structure known as «The Claw,» which would reportedly house lighting and equipment on the White House South Lawn. They contend that such construction would require congressional approval.

Third, the complaint raises concerns about potential taxpayer costs, arguing that any damage or restoration work to the South Lawn following the event could ultimately fall on the public.

The UFC event was initially promoted as part of celebrations surrounding the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, though the timing was later adjusted.

The main event is expected to feature a UFC lightweight title bout between Ilia Topuria and Justin Gaethje.
