Argentina’s national team defeated Austria 2-0 in the second round of the Group J stage at the 2026 World Cup. Lionel Messi scored both goals at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.

The team’s captain netted the opening goal in the 38th minute, becoming the all-time top scorer in World Cup history by overtaking Miroslav Klose. In stoppage time, he completed his brace, bringing his World Cup tally to 18 goals.

The match did not start well for Messi. In the ninth minute, Argentina were awarded a penalty following a VAR review, but the forward failed to convert from the spot. Attempting to outsmart Alexander Schlager, he sent his shot wide of the target.

After that, Austria began to play with more confidence going forward and forced Argentina to be more cautious on several occasions. Ralf Rangnick’s team pressed high, denied their opponents space to build attacks through midfield, and kept an even score for a long time.

The breakthrough of the first half came in the 38th minute. Facundo Medina joined the attack and passed to Messi, who sent the ball into the net with a one-touch finish. The goal gave Argentina the lead and saw Messi break Miroslav Klose’s World Cup record.

In the second half, Austria tried to fight back. One of their best chances came from a set piece after a shot by Marcel Sabitzer, but Emiliano Martínez made the save. Later, Michael Gregoritsch met a cross from the wing with a header, but sent it over the bar.

In the 90+5th minute, Messi scored his second goal and sealed the victory.

Argentina collected six points after two rounds. Austria has three. In the final group-stage game, Argentina will meet Jordan, while Austria will take on Algeria.
