Virtual actress Tilly Norwood has landed her first leading role in the feature film «Misaligned.»
The project is being developed by British studio Particle 6, which created the digital actress. The filmmakers say that, alongside AI specialists, directors, screenwriters, editors and other film industry professionals will also work on the project.
The story follows Tilly, who lives in a fictional digital world called the Tillyverse. She has no physical body, childhood or life experience, but has access to the entirety of human knowledge. After a mysterious AI from the dark web convinces her to abandon her limitations and venture into new territory, she begins experiencing desires, ambitions and emotions.
According to Elaine van der Velden, Tilly’s creator, actress and entrepreneur, the film will be both a comedy and a reflection on the boundaries between humans and AI.
«The film will absolutely be funny, chaotic and self-aware — very Tilly. But underneath it, there’s something deeper about identity, performance and our very human fears around AI,» van der Velden said.
She also emphasized that the studio wants to demonstrate how AI can become a new tool for filmmakers rather than replace them. As a result, a traditional film crew will work alongside AI specialists on set.
However, when news of the AI actress’s potential collaboration with Hollywood agencies emerged, many actors criticized the idea, expressing concern that digital characters could eventually replace human performers.
