Meta has disabled a controversial AI image-generation feature after widespread user backlash. Kursiv LifeStyle looked into why critics considered it a potential privacy risk on Instagram.

The feature was introduced as a creative tool that allowed users to generate and edit images directly within Meta AI. One of its most controversial capabilities let users create AI-generated images by referencing photos from public Instagram accounts. The feature was initially launched in the U.S., with a broader rollout planned. Although users could opt out by changing their privacy settings, the feature was enabled by default for many public accounts.

Privacy and information security experts described the feature as a «privacy time bomb,» warning that it could be misused to create deepfakes and other fake images.

«Our intent was to provide a useful creative tool and to give people control over whether their public content could be referenced in this way. We’ve heard the feedback that this feature missed the mark, so it’s no longer available,» Meta said.
