Japanese company Nissin has introduced the world’s first instant noodles that don’t require boiling water to prepare. Instead, you simply soak them in cold water.
The new product, called Hiyashi Cup Noodles, will go on sale across Japan on July 20. It is the first product of its kind in the brand’s 55-year history.
To make the project possible, the company developed and patented a special Cold Rehydrate technology that allows the noodles to fully rehydrate in just five minutes using cold water from the refrigerator. According to Nissin, neither boiling water nor ice is required.
The new lineup includes two flavors. The first is Spicy Kimchi, featuring chicken broth, the brand’s signature meat cubes, egg, green onions and sesame seeds. The second is Salt & Lemon Chicken, made with chicken, fish, and anchovy broths, and topped with chicken pieces, egg, bell pepper and green onions.
Nissin said it took five years to develop the cold noodles. The idea emerged in response to increasingly hot summers in Japan and the growing popularity of chilled dishes. The company hopes the new product will become a popular choice during the heatwave season.
Cup Noodles is one of the world’s best-known instant noodle brands. Nissin first launched Cup Noodles in 1971, while the original instant noodle technology was invented by Momofuku Ando, the company’s founder, in 1958.
