More than 172,000 Kazakh citizens have officially registered their decision regarding posthumous organ donation through the government’s online services portal eGov. Of those, about 156,100 registered a refusal, while around 16,100 gave their consent, according to the Ministry of Healthcare.
According to the ministry, 150 organ transplants were performed in Kazakhstan during the first half of 2026, including 108 kidney transplants, 31 liver transplants, five heart transplants, two lung transplants and four corneal transplants. Of those, 121 were performed using organs from living donors and 29 from deceased donors.
In addition, 108 potential deceased organ donors were identified during the first six months of the year. In seven cases, multiple organs were recovered for transplantation.
At the same time, according to the Ministry of Healthcare, statistics from recent years show a positive trend in organ donation. In 2023, 49 potential deceased donors were identified, compared with 86 in 2024 and 186 in 2025 — more than triple the figures recorded in previous years. In 2024, six donor procedures were completed, rising to 18 in 2025, enabling 68 vital organ transplants to be performed.
As of May 21, 2026, 4,739 patients were on the transplant waiting list, including 125 children. Of those, 4,208 required a kidney transplant, 293 required a liver transplant, 208 a heart transplant, 30 a lung transplant and five a combined heart-lung transplant.
«The development of transplant medicine cannot rely solely on improvements in infrastructure and medical technology. Equally important are public trust, social maturity, public awareness and an understanding that posthumous organ donation can save several lives,» Minister of Healthcare Akmaral Alnazarova said.
