Kazakhstan enhances mountain safety with emergency supply boxes

Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Emergency Situations has installed special containers equipped with emergency supplies in case tourists get stranded or encounter emergencies in the highlands.
The emergency supply boxes, labeled in three languages, are located near new orange observation posts. The boxes contain a first-aid kit, matches and cooking supplies, including self-heating meals, stew, porridge, rusks, a bundle of firewood and 10 liters of water.
Tourists who get lost may use the contents to survive until help arrives or contact with family members is restored. The ministry noted that installing such boxes improves safety in the highlands.
Although users welcomed the initiative in the comments on the ministry’s post showing the contents of the box, some raised concerns that it could be misused and joked that tourists might get lost on purpose.
Another user suggested providing a separate instructional video explaining that people should use the box contents only in case of emergency and not take the supply items without need or out of laziness.
As the ministry noted, the initiative aims to strengthen tourist safety in the mountains, as cases of hikers and even experienced climbers getting lost are not uncommon. In a recent case on Mount Elbrus in Russia, a group of nine people got lost on Aug. 17 and was found by rescuers on Aug. 18. According to Russian media reports, the authorities mobilized 14 rescuers to successfully evacuate the group in six hours. This turned out to be the best-case scenario; however, if the rescue operation takes longer under similar conditions, the contents of the emergency supply box would increase the chances of survival.
