A laser-based mosquito killer from Chinese startup Photon Matrix Lab has entered mass production. The company plans to ship the first batch of its Photon Matrix devices to customers by the end of August. Kursiv LifeStyle takes a look at how this futuristic device works.

Photon Matrix monitors flying insects using LiDAR, millimeter-wave radar and an AI-powered camera. Once the system detects a mosquito, it determines its position and aims a laser at the insect. In effect, a person is left to watch over a small «air defense» system on duty.

The company has already launched production and an online shop, offering versions equipped with infrared and blue lasers.

However, it is not clear how well the system works in reality. The claimed specifications have not been independently tested, while the manufacturer has promised to provide more details on safety.

Social media users are wondering whether the laser could mistakenly target a cat’s tail, a curious dog or even its owner. The developers have yet to prove that their device can indeed distinguish mosquitoes from anything else.
