According to The Film Stage, the drama starring Andrew Garfield and Yura Borisov will screen at the 64th New York Film Festival. Its world premiere is scheduled for Oct. 5. In addition, the first still from the film, which major studios were reluctant to take on, has surfaced online.
«Artificial» follows the development of neural networks through the stories of Sam Altman and Ilya Sutskever. The story begins in 2003, when Sutskever studies neural networks under the guidance of AI pioneer Geoffrey Hinton. He later meets Altman, who goes on to become a co-founder and CEO of OpenAI.
«Guadagnino (previously at NYFF with ‘Call Me by Your Name,’ ‘Bones and All,’ ‘Queer’ and ‘After the Hunt’) takes his biggest swing yet for this headlong plunge into our doomsday moment, with a script by Simon Rich that probes the increasing gray areas between human and machine, truth and lie,» the festival’s synopsis said.
However, even the big names attached to the film did not shield it from problems. Earlier, Netflix, A24, Focus Features and Warner Bros.’ Clockwork had reportedly passed on the film. In the end, the film was picked up by NEON.
According to Variety, rumors suggested that Altman is portrayed as a pathological liar and that Elon Musk is portrayed as highly antipathetic.
NEON plans a limited release in late December 2026 to qualify for Oscar consideration, followed by a wide release in early 2027.
