One in two Kazakh dads values money over raising children

More than half of Kazakhstani men believe providing financial support for their children is more important than being directly involved in their upbringing. At the same time, 60.4% of men surveyed said they do not have enough time to spend raising their children.

The findings come from a study by the Institute of Fatherhood and were announced by Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Culture and Information, according to Kazinform.

Financial support prioritized over involvement

Kairat Kambarov, chairman of the Committee on Youth and Family Affairs, presented the findings at a «Youth and Family Day» roundtable held last week to mark Family Day.

The study found that insufficient paternal involvement in raising children remains a problem for families in Kazakhstan. The issue was identified by 52.2% of women and 47.2% of men surveyed.

Among men, 54.9% said providing financial support for their children was more important than being directly involved in their upbringing. Another 60.4% said they did not have enough time to raise their children.

Parents need more support

According to Kambarov, having experience as a parent alone is not enough to increase fathers’ involvement in raising children. Parents also need access to legal, psychological and educational resources.

At the same time, nearly half of Kazakhstanis said their own families influence how they approach family life. Some 51.9% of men and 49.7% of women said they view their parents as role models.
