Kazakhstan has selected the film that will represent the country at the next Academy Awards: «Abel» («Әбіл»), a drama directed by Elzat Eskendir. The film is set against the backdrop of changes in Kazakhstan in the 1990s. Kursiv LifeStyle looks at what has captivated audiences about the film.
«Abel» will represent Kazakhstan at the 99th Academy Awards in the Best International Feature Film category.
The story is set in 1993, when the country is undergoing sweeping social and economic changes. The protagonist, a shepherd named Abel, faces the new reality of privatization following the dissolution of his collective farm. He has to adapt to the new rules while standing up for his dignity.
Erlan Toleutai stars in the film, while Polish cinematographer Jolanta Dylewska served as director of photography. The Oscar Committee of Kazakhstan highlighted the film’s artistic and visual qualities.
Cinematographer Kazbek Amerzhanov also praised the camerawork, describing it as restrained and almost unnoticeable, yet exquisitely crafted. In his words, the film leaves a cohesive and powerful impression.
The world premiere took place at the 29th Busan International Film Festival. The drama later received several awards at festivals in France, Kyrgyzstan, Vietnam and Bangladesh. «Abel» was released in Kazakhstan in June 2026.
