A lack of movement can slow bowel motility, leading to less frequent, firmer stools. According to Diana Iklasova, an Astana-based proctologist, what matters is not diet alone but also regular physical activity.
«When we sit a lot and move little, bowel motility can slow down, and stools become less frequent and firmer. You don’t necessarily have to spend an hour at the gym every day — regular walking, running, swimming or any other physical activity is better than constant sitting,» she noted.
The doctor emphasized that regulating bowel function requires a comprehensive approach. However, if constipation becomes a regular occurrence, it’s better to see your doctor rather than rely on laxative.
A soup diet is not necessary
As Iklasova noted, if the stool is soft and there is no discomfort, it’s okay to have a bowel movement once every two or three days.
It’s also normal not to eat soup every day, drink less than 2 liters of water daily, or have a bowel movement at the same time every morning.
The proctologist also said that drinking coffee on an empty stomach is fine, as long as you feel well afterward.
Don’t wait if there is a problem
The most important thing, according to Iklasova, is to see a specialist immediately if any discomfort, pain or other symptoms arise.
«As a proctologist, I know that people wait until the very last minute, and that’s a mistake. They wait for the problem to go away on its own, get used to the discomfort, and ignore symptoms for years. But the situation is actually quite simple: the sooner you come in, the easier the solution. Honestly, the most common mistake isn’t the disease itself, but delaying the visit to the doctor,» she emphasized.
