China to build several large wind power plants in Kazakhstan
Samruk-Energy, a subsidiary of Samruk-Kazyna, has reached an agreement with China Energy Overseas Investment Co., Ltd. and SANY Renewable Energy Co., Ltd. to build two 500-megawatt wind power plants. The agreement was signed at the Kazakhstan-China Investment Forum in Almaty, attended by President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.
Samruk-Energy Chair Kairat Maksutov, China Energy Group Overseas Investment Company Vice President Li Yahong and Tang Chao from SANY Renewable Energy signed the agreement.
The project includes two 500-megawatt wind power plants, two energy storage systems, each with a power capacity of 150 MW and an energy capacity of 300 MWh, and approximately 800 kilometers of 500-kilovolt high-voltage transmission lines connecting the Aktogai and Taldykorgan substations. The project site is located in the Zhetysu region. The agreement is valid for three years, with an option to extend it.
In addition, Akmola Region Governor Marat Akhmetzhanov signed an agreement with Xu Mingfeng, Sungrow’s representative for Central Asia, to strengthen cooperation on wind power projects with a combined capacity of 450 MW in the region.
As of the end of 2025, renewables accounted for 7% of Kazakhstan’s total electricity generation. The government aims to increase this share to 15% by 2030 and 50% by 2050. Coal-fired generation still accounts for more than half of the country’s electricity output.
