Uzbekistan moves to introduce life imprisonment for pedophilia

Uzbekistan is seeking to toughen punishment for sexual crimes against children. A corresponding draft law is now before the Legislative Chamber (Oliy Majlis).
Tougher penalties for sexual violence against children
One of the bill’s key provisions concerns sexual violence against children under 14. The proposal calls for lengthy prison sentences or life imprisonment for rape and other sexual offenses involving minors.
The bill would also abolish the statute of limitations for crimes against the sexual integrity of children. People convicted of sexual offenses against children would remain liable regardless of how many years have passed since the crime was committed or the sentence was imposed.

Special procedures for child victims
The legislation would also change procedures for investigative actions involving child victims. It proposes mandatory video recording of interrogations and requires confrontations with suspects to be conducted under speci al procedures designed to minimize additional psychological stress for children.
If a close relative is accused of abuse, a child protection services representative would be required to be present at all stages of the investigation and trial. Child victims and minor witnesses would also be guaranteed free legal assistance funded by the state.

Similar legislation in Kazakhstan
A similar law took effect in Kazakhstan in April 2024. The legislation signed by President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev criminalized domestic violence and introduced life imprisonment for sexual offenses against children.
