Kazakhstan takes the baton to host 2027 World Judo Championships

The International Judo Federation (IJF) flag has been officially handed over to Kazakhstan, which will host the next World Judo Championships.

The ceremony took place during the ongoing championships in Baku, with IJF Secretary General Lisa Allan presenting the flag to Kuanyshbek Yessekeyev, president of the Kazakhstan Judo Federation.
The 2027 World Judo Championships are scheduled for June 7-14 in Astana and will be an important stage in the qualification process for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Athletes will compete for ranking points that contribute to Olympic qualification.

Yessekeyev said hosting the tournament was a major honor and a significant responsibility for Kazakhstan, reflecting the international judo community’s confidence in the country. He said the organizers aimed to meet the IJF’s requirements and standards while giving particular attention to preparing the national team.
He added that competing at home in front of local fans would place additional responsibility on Kazakh athletes. The federation intends to improve training systems, provide high-quality support and ensure the team participates in international competitions to prepare for the event.
Yessekeyev also said the championship would require extensive preparation and provide an opportunity both to strengthen Kazakhstan’s position in international sport and to further develop judo domestically.

Kazakhstan’s record in international judo
Kazakhstan will host the senior World Judo Championships for the second time. Astana previously hosted the tournament in August 2015.
From 2023 through 2026, Kazakhstan also hosted the Qazaqstan Barysy Grand Slam, an event on the IJF’s official calendar that contributes to the international competition pathway and Olympic qualification process. The tournaments have helped the country build experience in organizing major judo events.
