Philippines plans to open embassy in Astana

Kazakhstan welcomed the Philippines’ intention to open an embassy in Astana. The issue was discussed by Kazakhstan’s Foreign Minister Mukhtar Tileuberdi and Philippine Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs Leo Herrera-Lim.
Tileuberdi said that establishing a permanent diplomatic presence would help deepen bilateral ties and expand practical cooperation.
During the meeting, the two sides discussed key issues on the bilateral agenda and prospects for further developing Kazakhstan-Philippines relations. The discussions focused on expanding trade, economic and investment cooperation, as well as strengthening engagement within the UN and ASEAN.
Tileuberdi noted positive momentum in political dialogue, including a meeting with Philippine Secretary of Foreign Affairs Maria Theresa Lazaro on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.
«Following the meeting, the sides reaffirmed their mutual interest in maintaining regular political dialogue and consistently advancing cooperation between Kazakhstan and the Philippines,» Kazakhstan’s Foreign Ministry said.
Meanwhile, in 2023, bilateral trade turnover stood at $25.7 million, most of which consisted of imports from the Philippines, including printers, copiers and fax machines. At the same time, Kazakhstan’s exports to the Philippines fell to $248,000. For comparison, bilateral trade peaked at $119.4 million in 2018, when Kazakhstan exported oil and semi-finished steel products.
The Philippines’ main exports to Kazakhstan have traditionally included electronics, static converters and office equipment. Kazakhstan’s exports, meanwhile, have included ferrous metals and equipment such as ATMs, engines and drilling tools.
