Collagen powders and capsules have become a major trend in the quest for firm skin. Many people dream of finding an «elixir of eternal youth» in a jar, but science suggests otherwise. According to endocrinologist Zukhra Pavlova, in most cases, taking collagen supplements is simply a waste of money.
«Every other patient who comes to see me asks whether they should take collagen. But before I can even answer, they often tell me they’re already taking it and are eager to share which brand they use. Their eyes are full of hope, as if they expect me to say, ‘Oh, that’s great! Keep taking it, and we’ll all be young and beautiful!’» the doctor said.
However, it doesn’t work this way. Once collagen reaches the stomach, it breaks down into amino acids. The body then decides how to use them, and there is no way to control this process, she explained.
There is an exception, though
«We cannot direct these nutrients specifically to the skin to make it firm and beautiful. However, collagen hydrolysate derived from squid has proved effective for that purpose. Research has shown that it actually works quite well,» Pavlova said.
According to the doctor, if you have already purchased a jar of collagen, use it. Our bodies always need amino acids, and collagen certainly won’t do any harm. However, if you truly want to keep your skin and joints in good shape, you need to look at the bigger picture and take a more systematic approach.
«High-quality protein-rich foods, functional nutrition or a good protein shake will provide your body with the same building materials,» she explained.
