Artificial intelligence has entered the realm of mysticism. Instead of visiting a psychic, people can now ask a chatbot to read their palms, cast their horoscopes or predict their futures. Fortune tellers and other esoteric practitioners are already beginning to see AI chatbots as competitors.

Dozens of chatbots now offer astrological forecasts, palm readings and daily horoscopes, attracting users just as human fortune tellers do. Digital fortune tellers have a clear advantage: They are available 24/7, require no appointments and often provide initial readings for free, although more detailed forecasts can come at a considerable cost.

Psychics see AI as a competitor

According to The Guardian, this competition has not been welcomed by everyone in the esoteric industry. Some psychics accuse AI chatbots of fraud, arguing that algorithms lack empathy and the genuine personal connection they believe is essential to their work.

A growing challenge for Kazakhstan’s fortune tellers

Fortune tellers, astrologers and psychics are also in high demand in Kazakhstan. Practitioners in this field officially reported more than 2.9 billion tenge (approximately $6 million) in income in 2024, according to the analytical portal Finprom.

Local practitioners may now find themselves competing not only with one another but also with AI-powered fortune-telling services.
