Uzbekistan to take back money Gulnara Karimova transferred abroad

The money will be recovered through a trust fund run by the UN

According to the press service of the Ministry of Justice of Uzbekistan, about $131 million belonging to Gulnara Karimova, daughter of the former Uzbek president Islam Karimov, will be returned to Uzbekistan from Switzerland with help of the UN Trust Fund.

On February 11, 2022, Switzerland and Uzbekistan conducted talks and agreed to establish a new multilateral trust fund run by the UN. The fund is going to be used for the recovery of assets that have been seized in the course of a criminal investigation against Karimova. As of today, $131 million is ready to be recovered.

In August 2015 Karimova was found guilty of extortion and tax fraud. On December 18, 2017, she was convicted and sentenced to ten years in jail under a separate criminal case. On March 18, 2021, Karimova’s duration of custody was extended to 13 years and four months under the third criminal case.
