According to the official website Akorda.kz, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has signed an edict replacing the former interior minister Erlan Turgumbayev with Marat Akhmetzhanov, who used to serve as the head of the Anti-Corruption Agency.
«In accordance with the decision of the president Erlan Turgumbayev has been appointed the counselor to the president of the Republic of Kazakhstan,» the official statement said.
Akhmetzhanov had worked as the head of the Anti-corruption agency since Spring 2021. Over the period from 2016 to 2021 he was the prosecutor general of the country.
Lieutenant General of the police Erlan Turgumbayev was born on August 14, 1962, in Almaty. He studied law (graduated in 1984) and economics (2003) at Kazakh National University.
Over his career, he worked as an investigator and head of a district department of police. In 2001-2002 was an executive director of Kazatomprom. Over 2006-2012 Turgumbaev serves as head of the Almaty Police Department. In 2012-2019 he was deputy head of the Minister of Internal Affairs. He is also a member of the human rights watchdog under the president of Kazakhstan.
