Kazakhstan needs at least 40,000 charging stations all over the country or 8,000 charging stations with five ports each in order to boost the development of electric transportation, according to Adilbek Orumbayev from Kazavtoprom, an association of the automobile industry in Kazakhstan.

As he noted, the country’s Ministry of Industry has been preparing an overall plan for developing the machine-building industry which is expected to be adopted in the middle of this year. In 2024, Kazavtoprom and the ministry will develop and adopt another document – a new concept for the development of electric transportation. So far, the association has been estimating how much money might be required for the realization of the concept, Orumbayev noted.

Over the past six years, the number of electric vehicles in Kazakhstan fell from 725 cars in 2016 to 498 in 2021. In 2022, the country reported 815 such cars. In 2023, this segment is expected to reach 1,500 vehicles with electric engines, the representative of Kazavtoprom said.

The electric transportation market in Kazakhstan is in its nascent stage. There is no service for electric vehicles and only 67 charging stations available within the country, eDrive.kz reported. The vast majority of them are located in Almaty and Astana.

According to the energy industry development concept by the Ministry of Energy, the number of electric cars is expected to reach 6,300 cars by 2030. By now, the segment accounts for 0.01% of the automobile market.
