The Central Election Commission of Uzbekistan has revealed the preliminary results of the presidential elections in the country. According to this data, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, the current president of Uzbekistan, won 87.05% of the vote. President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev of Kazakhstan was the first to congratulate his colleague on the victory.
As the CEC reported, Robakhon Makhmudova, the first deputy chairman of the Supreme Court, won 4.43% of the vote, Ulugbek Inoyatov, the leader of the People’s Democratic Party, won 4.02% of the vote, and Abdushukur Khamzaev, the head of the Ecological Party, won 3.74% of the votes.
«President Tokayev described the results of the presidential election as proof of people’s support to the current Uzbek president’s political course aimed at ensuring sustainable growth, stability and prosperity of Uzbekistan,» the president’s press service said.
According to official data, there are 19.5 million people eligible to vote in Uzbekistan. More than 230,000 of them were expected to vote at 56 polling stations abroad.
The Uzbek legislation requires at least 33% of eligible voters to take part in the presidential elections, otherwise, the elections will be pronounced invalid. The law also provides for a repeat vote if none of the candidates receives more than 50% of the vote.
