Kazakhstani authorities confirm the arrest of Ex-Minister of Justice Marat Beketaev

The Anti-Corruption Agency of the Republic of Kazakhstan has confirmed that Ex-Minister of Justice Marat Beketaev has been detained.

«We are confirming that the detained individual is Ex-Minister of Justice Beketaev. The arrest of the suspect was authorized by the court. No more details can be revealed due to the ongoing investigation,» the press service of the agency told the Kursiv edition.

The context. On October 21, the Anti-Corruption Agency detained the former minister of justice, who is accused of lobbying interests of an affiliated business and causing serious damage to the state.

The agency refused to provide more details, citing the ongoing investigation. However, the agency underlined that under the country’s constitution, everyone is considered not guilty until otherwise proven in court.

The agency also said that it is continuing to take part in public asset recovery. For example, the agency managed to recover $1.7 billion in cash and assets over the past 18 months.

There were four ministers of justice in Kazakhstan over the past decade, including Berik Imashev (2012- 2016), Marat Beketaev (2016-2022), Kanat Musin (2022-2023) and Azamat Yeskarayev, the current minister since January 2023.
