According to Dmitry Peskov, the official spokesperson for the Russian president, Russia respects Kazakhstan’s decision “not to join BRICS yet.” However, he emphasized that the organization does not intend to replace the United Nations (UN). Despite Kazakhstan’s stance, Russia still anticipates President Tokayev’s participation in the upcoming BRICS summit in Kazan.
This statement came after Berik Uali, the spokesperson for the president of Kazakhstan, revealed that Kazakhstan had received several invitations to join BRICS but decided not to do so anytime soon. Uali also emphasized that President Tokayev does not see any alternatives to the UN. In response, Peskov reiterated that BRICS is not meant to be a substitute for the UN.
“Kazakhstan is our friend, strategic partner and ally. Our relationship with this country is of great importance to us. Therefore, Kazakhstan’s decision to join any organization is entirely its own. However, to be clear, BRICS does not conflict with the comprehensive nature of the UN,” Peskov said, as reported by RBK.
Peskov also added that Russia is still looking forward to Kassym-Jomart Tokayev‘s presence in Kazan for the BRICS+ summit on October 23-24.
“We are eagerly awaiting President Tokayev’s participation in Kazan. His presence will significantly contribute to the development of regional and international cooperation,” Peskov concluded.
