The cost of perfection: how much is the full upgrade for Almaty’s new airport?
The Almaty International Airport will be brought to a perfect condition within three to four years, promised Goker Kose, the airport’s president, on the sidelines of the Regional Seminar on Green Airports. He said that to achieve this target, $300 million in investments is required.
«I’d say it will take time. But if we spend another $300 million, we hope we will reach the highest standards at the airport within three to four years,» Kose said.
He also highlighted that the new international terminal was completed and delivered ahead of schedule. For this reason, there are still issues that remain to be mended, but the airport administration does everything possible to resolve them. Furthermore, all drainage-system-related problems have already been fixed.
«The airport’s infrastructure is honestly extremely old. The upcoming large investments will allow us to enhance all the parts of the airport and terminals. We are improving everything, including the bomb shelters within the airport territory,» Kose noted.
The airport’s president clarified that the old terminal serving domestic flights will be fully renovated by the end of 2025.
«The investments will be used to renovate a left runway, drainage system and existing apron. Everything related to the runway will be redeveloped,» Kose added.
According to the manager, investments in the airport are expected to reach at least $100 million in the near future, although the exact amount will depend on the volume of work during the summer.
On June 1, a new terminal was opened in Almaty, and all international flights were relocated there.
Almaty Airport is controlled by Turkey’s TAV Airports Holding. As previously reported by Kursiv.media, the owner plans to develop the facility by increasing rates.
