Uzbekistan’s cabinet will relocate to a new city, New Tashkent, which is expected to be completed by 2050, according to a statement from Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, reports Gazeta.uz.

On Nov. 23, President Mirziyoyev planted a tree as part of a project to create a green belt around the capital. He also announced plans to relocate the country’s government offices to New Tashkent, a city currently under construction near the capital.

«God willing, we’ll build New Tashkent and move all government offices there. We’re already working on these plans. Imagine a city without big cars and traffic jams, where people can truly enjoy their lives,» Mirziyoyev said.

Construction of the new administrative center began in March 2023. President Mirziyoyev initiated the project, warning that overpopulation would make the capital unlivable within five years.

New Tashkent is designed to accommodate up to 2 million people. The city will house government offices, educational institutions and cultural centers. The current government district will be redeveloped into a hub for hotels, businesses and other services.
